Saturday, January 10'th, 2009. The lights go out. The screen comes to life. A lone cowboy rides onto the massive screen, his white steed shining in the sunlight. A whip cracks, his horse snorts. A title blasts onto the screen: 'The Widow's Might'! It's the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival, and this is the premiere of the film.

Over 1300 audience members packed into the Lila Cockrell theater in San Antonio for the premiere, and the mood was absolutely electric. As the next 100 minutes of film unfolded, the audience laughed, cried, and cheered their way through. This was the first time young filmmakers John Moore (19) and David Heustis (20) had viewed their film on the big screen.

When the story closed, and those classic words, 'The End' hit the screen, the audience exploded in an ear bursting standing ovation that even shocked the festival staff. The credits rolled, a bonus scene plays, and the audience sits down for a moment, only to leap to their feet a second time! John and David were a bit more confident in their chances with this response; after a quick question and answer session, the audience returned one more standing ovation that lasted minutes.

The SAICFF presented tough competition this year; features such as Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, Fireproof, and The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry were produced by teams with years of experience, and multiple features under their belts. The Widow's Might was HeuMoore's (Heustis and Moore's filmmaking company) first attempt at a feature film; and they were nervous that it wouldn't hold up against more acclaimed projects.

But The Widow's Might held it's own. The Widow's Might left the festival with the Audience Choice award, having more than twice the number of votes as their nearest competitor, and it was also awarded the prestigious 'Best of Festival' Jubilee award, while Fireproof came in as first runner-up. This marks the first time that a Christian film has been awarded the largest cash prize in the United States, and makes the HeuMoore team the youngest team to ever win the 'Best of Festival' award from the SAICFF.
